A+ A A-

A voi l'intervista allo "Squarta angeli". Buona lettura!

Come state? Come vi sentite a riguardo?

2. Volete parlarci della scrittura del disco? Come avete lavorato?

Come è possibile?

Voi come la state affrontando?

Ti vogliamo bene. Con affetto, Tom.

[English Version]

1. Hi guys and welcome to Allaroundmetal magazine. It’s a pleausure for us. How are you? You're going to release your sixteenth album “Genesis XIX”. How do you feel?

We are all doing very well. We are happy and proud that genesis is completed. There is always something very special when a new album is released.

2. Do you want to talk about the writing process? How did you work?

We still do everything according to old fathers' custom. We meet in the rehearsal room, start a jam session, have a few beers and it sprays out for us too. Most of the time it starts with a guitar riff and everyone adds their ideas. Then I arrange everything again to adapt the title for my vocal parts and to match the dimensions of the text. But there are also rehearsals where we go home without having achieved anything; you just can't get over the knee. Both guitarists are great songwriters but with different points of view. Frank is also very influenced by guitarists from the 60s and 70s, Yorck is also interested in modern bands. But these different songs make the new album so colorful. We recorded the songs in our small studio, but later I came up with the idea to mix it in a big and professional studio on an analogue desk. But the most studios in our area are gone, just Siggi`s woodhouse studio is left. Siggi was very interested in a cooperation with Sodom. We also recorded the vocals with Siggi, cause he have better high end equipment and professional microphones for vocal recording.

3. “Genesis XIX” is the first Sodom album that counts 4 members. Why did you decide to add another guitar?

I came up with the idea to recruit a second axeman when Bernemann was still in the band. But he seemed not very interested and I thought that he would never accepted a second guitarist by his side.  Later, we started rehearsing sessions with Frank for the first time after he left the band. And now songs like "Nuclear Winter", "Sodomy & Lust", and "Christ Passion" sound so amazing and authentic. I was so astonished that the guitar sound is exactly the same like on "Persecution Mania" or "Agent Orange" albums. Now, we are able to reproduce the songs in an original way during the live sets. Yorck as well is a big Sodom fan, so he came up with a lot of ideas for new songs and upcoming setlists. With two guitarists we are able to perform songs which are not working with just one. Even my bass can`t replace a second guitar. The live sound is getting more brutal and dynamic.

4. What about the great Frank Blackfire? Considering he played on "Agent Orange", how much did his style influenced "Genesis XIX"?

Frank is also a songwriter and contributed a few pieces to the new album. He always plays the same style as on Agent Orange, but that's what I love. His style fits a lot of our new songs perfectly.

5. You had a lot of line-up changes throughout your career, but your sound and style are always the same. How do you do it?

This is very important to me. Of course, new musicians always sound a little different, but of course they try to integrate the magic of the old Sodom records into the new songs. I think my bass sound and my voice ultimately turn every song into a Sodom song.

6. In recent years many historical thrash metal bands have released some fantastic albums. Can we say that there is a return of old school music?

In 2000 there was a return to classic metal and many historical bands got a lot of attention again. Many speak of a Thash revival, but to be completely honest, I cannot share this view at all. We have always been there. Contrary to all trends, Sodom is probably the only band that has always stayed true to itself. But the new generation of fans is now interested in these old-school bands again. That opens up completely new fan potential for us.

7.  What about the new generations? Will they one day be able to take your place?

No, the old bands can no longer be replaced. No one can ever fill these gaps. New bands should try to create something new without copying the old bands. You can get inspiration, but it's very important these days to maintain your independence and originality.

8. 2020 is perhaps one of the most difficult for everyone, due to the pandemic. How are you dealing with it? What are your plans when it is all over?

No plans at all. Just writing new sonds. What else we can do? This pandemic is a disaster, especially for artists, actors and musicians. We had to cancel or postpone all of our shows this year. State aid is also completely inadequate. Art and culture don't count for much in Germany. But who has the solution to the problem? Who knows when it will continue? The whole world now seems to be out of control…

9. Sodom have been on the metal scene since 1982; a very long career. Being "on the road" after all this time has to be stressful and difficult. How can you always be in such great shape?

As long as we stay creative and enjoy it, it's no problem at all to write new songs. Even after almost 40 years, I always have a lot of ideas that flow into the songs. We are able to release an album every year, but that only ever happens in coordination with the record company. Times have changed and time is running faster and faster, so that we can only produce an album every two to three years. Of course, I'm not getting any younger. But I enjoy every minute on stage. The long and uncomfortable journey to the venues is exhausting. I really hate that. But as an internationally known band you have to do that. But we always have energy. Personally, I've never used drugs before, but I still smoke. After the show there are also a few beers. But you have to be careful and you have to learn to divide your strength.

10. I leave the last words to you. What do you have to say to our readers and all your Italian fans? Thank you so much for your time, stay safe and we hope to see you soon in Italy.

We have to wait and see how the current situation develops. If we can't do concerts next year, we'll probably release a new album again. So it never gets boring. We already have enough ideas again… but anyway, thanx for your loyal support all over the dacades. We love you. Yours truly, Tom.
