Vengono dalla Svezia, terra dove il concetto di Metal batte forte, con un interessantissimo comparto tecnico e (lasciatemelo dire), una front woman che non passa di certo inosservata, questi New Zone, sembrano essere tra le promesse più succulente di questo 2018. Abbiamo chiesto alla singer, la splendida Nicole Willerton, nella loro prima intervista in Italia, cosa dobbiamo aspettarci, per iniziare a conoscere bene questa promettente band !

Anthony- Ciao Nicole, benvenuto sulle pagine di "All Around Metal"!

Nicole Willerton - Ciao, grazie a te, sono lieta di farlo !

1- Come sono nati i New Zone ?

- Io e il nostro chitarrista ritmico, Tim Vincent, abbiamo iniziato a scrivere canzoni per la band nel 2015 durante la nostra università musicale. Entrambi condividiamo l'amore per il metal e, specialmente per il symphonic metal, quindi abbiamo iniziato a esplorare i suoni che vorremmo fossero nella nostra musica. Dal momento che abbiamo diversi background musicali ci sono molte influenze nel nostro sound e quindi diventa un'alternativa. Perciò chiamiamo il nostro genere Alternative Symphonic Metal . Più tardi contattammo il nostro batterista Måns Lögdlund, il chitarrista solista Johan Rapp e il bassista Torgny Elgstrand. Li conoscevamo già in passato e vivono vicino alla nostra città natale. Tim ha anche suonato con Johan prima e Torgny è stato il bassista della vecchia band melodica death metal di Tim, gli "Ennead".

2- Avete già realizzato lavori in studio ?

-Ho praticamente vissuto in studio durante il mio periodo presso la scuola di musica, perché mi diverte molto. Per la band abbiamo fatto un lavoro in studio e un album completo. Non scriviamo le canzoni in studio, ma proviamo suoni, melodie e idee.

3- Chi sono i principali compositori della band ?

-I principali compositori della band siamo io e Tim. Di solito scrivo le melodie e gli accordi mentre Tim fa i pesanti riff e i drops. Durante la creazione delle versioni demo della nostra musica, Tim registra gli strumenti rock ensemble (midi-drums, bass e chitarre) mentre io compongo arrangiamenti orchestrali, suoni SFX e midi.

4- E i testi? Chi è il principale autore delle lyrics ?

-Scrivo io tutti i testi della nostra band. Per quanto mi riguarda, volevo che i testi dei New Zone fossero romantici ed artistici, perché è quello che provo per la musica che mi piace. Ogni volta che ascolto una canzone ottengo immagini e colori nella mia testa, quindi ci sono molti metafore che invocano colori e concetti onirici. Mi piace che i testi siano passionali e intensi, permettendo alla musica di portare emozioni e rilasciarle all'ascoltatore. Come se tu fossi in una nuova zona, ahah!

5- Il vostro album sarà un concept ?

-Il nostro album sarà intitolato "Desire" e tutte le canzoni sono basate su desideri ed emozioni differenti al suo interno.

6- Che dire della scena metal in Svezia? E 'davvero così fluente ? 

-Rispetto ad altri paesi, penso che la Svezia sia aperta al genere metal. Voglio dire, anche se il metal potrebbe non essere nel mainstream, penso che abbia il proprio posto ovunque, come se fosse un bisogno che continua ad essere appagato. La stessa cosa per altri generi più alternativi. La Svezia ha molti grandi festival / luoghi, radio / stampa per musica rock / metal.

7- Quali sono le tue band di riferimento ?

- Haha ne abbiamo così tante ! Direi che la musica che ascolti più naturalmente diventerà il tuo riferimento per questo motivo cerco di ascoltare molti generi diversi tra loro, per avere più riferimenti. Se c'è qualcosa di specifico nel quale ci ispiriamo, è la musica da videogioco. Mi ispiro agli effetti sonori industriali e all'uso di strumenti midi. Scegliere una band è difficile perché me ne piacciono così tante !

8- Preferisci il lavoro in studio o le attività dal vivo?

- Mi piace tutto ciò che è nella band, ma perferisco il lavoro in background. Adoro registrare le voci e scrivere le canzoni. Una delle cose che mi piace di più è anche quando creiamo le immagini e i video perché possiamo esprimerci anche visivamente. Per me è importante far emergere l'immagine che vogliamo mostrare dalla nostra musica.

9- Come si considera la scena italiana in Svezia?

-Questa è una domanda difficile perché non posso dire di essere coinvolta in nessuna parte della scena italiana. Alcune persone in Svezia potrebbero ascoltare molta musica italiana, ma dal mio punto di vista non ho mai sentito nulla a parte i vostri straordinari concerti d'opera, lirica e classica. Penso che riguardi il genere e la musica piuttosto che il Paese.

10- Hai avuto un feat con i Neropulsar, una band italiana. Come ti sei sentita ? Cosa ne pensi di loro ?

-Sì, l'ho fatto. La prima parola che mi viene in mente è eccitante ! Ho sempre desiderato essere presente nella musica che punta al black metal a dati i concetti del genere. Ho avuto la libertà di creare il mio melodie nei testi che ho ricevuto e che mi sono piaciuti. A chiunque stia leggendo :  controllate questi ragazzi !

11- Con quale band vuoi condividere il palco ?

-Anche questa è una domanda difficile. Dovrò sognare un po 'ora haha! Se dovessi scegliere una band, direi il progetto Devin Townsend perché amo la musica e lui sperimenta molto. Un altro gruppo con cui sarebbe stato molto bello condividere un palco, sarebbe stati gli HIM, ma dal momento che hanno avuto il loro tour di addio non succederà.

12- Hai già suonato fuori dalla Svezia? Dove ?

- No, abbiamo suonato finora solo in Svezia, ma vorremmo suonare in altri paesi quando sarà il momento giusto.

13- Da cosa traete la vostra ispirazione ?

-Sono sempre ispirata da molte cose. Succederà a breve e dirò che sono ispirata dalle forti emozioni. Potrebbero venire da un'esperienza, una canzone, una persona, qualsiasi cosa.

14- Quando avremo il piacere di vedervi in Italia ?

-Non appena programmeremo un concerto in Italia, speriamo presto !

15- I vostri progetti futuri.

- Stiamo pianificando di pubblicare il nostro primo singolo originale dal nostro prossimo album insieme a un video musicale il 23 febbraio, quindi rimanete sintonizzati ! Dopo l' uscita del singolo, continueremo a suonare e rilasciare materiale.

Anthony -  Hi Nicole, welcome on the pages of "All Around Metal" !

Nicole Willerton : Hello, thank you, glad to do it !

1- How did New Zone come together ? 

- Me and our rhythm guitarrist Tim Vincent began writing songs for the band all the way back in 2015 duing the time at our music university. We both share the love for metal and especially symphonic metal, so we began exploring the sounds we would like to be in the music. Since we have different musical backgrounds there are a lot of influences in our sound and therefor it becomes alternative. Therefor we call our genre alternative symphonic metal. Later on we contacted our drummer Måns Lögdlund, lead guitarist Johan Rapp and bass player Torgny Elgstrand. We knew them from the past and they live near our hometown. Tim has also played with Johan before and Torgny was the bass player in Tim’s old melodic death metal band Ennead. 

2- Have you already done studio work ?

-I practically lived in the studio during my time at music school because I really enjoy it. For the band we have done studio work for a full album. We don’t nessesarily write the songs in the studio but we do try out sounds, melodies and ideas.

3- Who's the main composers of the band ?

-The main composers of the band is me and Tim. Usually I will write the melodies and chords while Tim does the heavy riffs and drops. When creating the demo versions of our music Tim will record the rock ensemble instruments (midi-drums, bass and guitars) while I will compose the orchestrial arrangements, SFX and midi sounds. 

4- What about the lyrics ? Who's the main songwriter ?

- I write all the lyrics to our band. For me I wanted the lyrics in New Zone to be romantic and artistic because that’s how I feel about music I like. Whenever I hear a song I get images and colours in my head, therefor there are many metafors that invole colours and dreamlike concepts. I like the lyrics to be passionate and strengthening, allowing the music to bring emotions and release. As if you where in a new zone, haha!

5- Is your album a concept ?

-Our album will be titled Desire and all songs are based around different desires and emotions within it.

6-  What about the metal scene in Sweden ? Is it really so fluent ?

-Compared to other countries I think Sweden are open for the metal genre. I mean even though metal might not be in the mainstream I think it has it’s own place everywhere, like it’s own group that always continues to be appriciated. The same thing for other more alternaive genres. Sweden has got many great festivals/venues, radios/press for rock/metal music. 

7- What's your reference bands?

-Haha we have so many! I would say the music you listen to the most naurally will become your reference. I listen to many genres so it might come across. If there’s something specific we are inspired by in our sound it is game-music. I’m inspired by the industrial sound effects and use of midi-instruments. Chosing a band is difficult because I like so many.

8- Do you prefer studio work, or the live activities ?

-I like everthing abou being in the band but I perfer the work behind it. I love recording vocals and writing the songs. One of the things I enjoy the most is also when we create the images and videos since we can express ourselves in image as well. It’s important for me to bring out the image we want to show from our music.

9- How is consider the italian scene in Sweden ?

- That’s a difficult question because I can’t say that I’m involved in any part of the Italian scene. Some people in Sweden might listen to a lot of Italian music but from my perspecitve I never hear anything about it apart from your amazing opera concerts. I think it’s more about the genre and music rather than the country.

10- You had a featuring with Neropulsar, an italian band. How did this feel ? What do you think about them ?

- Yes I did. The first word that comes to mind is exciting. I’ve always wanted to feature in music that aims towards black metal because of the concepts of the genre. I got the freedom to create my own melodie to the lyrics I got sent which I enjoyed. To anyone who reads this, definitely check these guys out.

11- Which band you want to share the stage with ?

-Again that’s a difficult question. I will have to dream a little now haha! If I had to chose a band I would say Devin Townsend project because I love the music and he experiments a lot. Another band that would have been very nice to share with would have been HIM but since they had their farewell tour it won’t happen. 

12- Have you already played out of Sweden? Where ?

-No we have only played in Sweden so far but we would like to play in other countries when the time is right for it.

13- What does inspire you ?

-Again I’m inspired by many things. I’m going to make it short and say that I’m inspired by strong emotions. They could come from an experience, a song, a person, anything.

14- When will we have the pleasure of seeing you in Italy ?

-As soon as we have a gig planned in Italy so hopefully soon. 

15- Your future projects .

- We are planning to release our first original single from our upcoming album along with a music video on the 23rd of February so stay tuned! After the single release we will continue to gig and release material.
